National Child Abuse Prevention Month: Standing Together to Protect Our Children

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness and inspire collective action to protect children from abuse and neglect. Across the nation, communities, organizations, and individuals are coming together to emphasize the importance of strengthening families and creating safe, supportive environments for every child.

This month serves as a powerful reminder that preventing child abuse and neglect is a shared responsibility. By promoting education, providing resources, and fostering supportive networks, we can help families thrive and ensure children grow up in safe, nurturing homes.

In support of these efforts, District Attorney Tommy Humphries, alongside the Oklahoma District Attorneys Association, has declared 2025 as the “Year of the Child.” This statewide initiative prioritizes the safety and well-being of Oklahoma’s children by bringing greater attention to critical issues, promoting collaboration among community partners, and implementing effective strategies to protect vulnerable youth.

District 4 is fortunate to have two accredited Child Advocacy Centers (CACs)—the Care Campus in Enid and the CART House in El Reno. These centers play a vital role in helping children who have experienced abuse.

When abuse is suspected, a child is brought to the CAC, a safe, child-focused space, by a trusted adult. A trained interviewer helps the child share their experience to minimize retraumatization. After the interview, a team of professionals—including medical staff, law enforcement, mental health experts, and others—works together to decide the best way to support and protect the child. CACs offer vital services like therapy, medical exams, courtroom prep, victim advocacy, and case management.

“Protecting our children requires everyone’s involvement,” said Tommy Humphries. “By working together, we can prevent abuse and ensure our children have the safe and supportive environments they deserve.” Join us this month as we stand united to protect our children and strengthen families.
