On May 8, 2024, Michael Keith Sharry was sentenced by a Canadian County judge for five felonies and two misdemeanors. Those counts include Assault and Battery with a Deadly Weapon, Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Domestic Assault and Battery by Strangulation, Domestic Assault and Battery by Strangulation, Domestic Assault and Battery, and Obstructing.  After hearing the facts of the case, which revealed a night of terror inflicted upon the victim by Sharry, District Court Judge Khristan Strubhar considered the State’s request and sentenced the Defendant to 25 years’ incarceration, with 10 years of probation to follow for the Assault and Battery with a Deadly Weapon. Judge Khristan Strubhar then sentenced the defendant to the maximum number of years for each of the remaining counts, to run concurrently with the 25 year sentence.

These charges stem from a relationship that was filled with domestic violence both verbal and physical. The domestic abuse culminated that night when Sharry became jealous over the victim’s cell phone and demanded the cell phone be given to him. Once the victim refused, Sharry strangled the victim twice, hit and ran over the victim with a pickup truck, punched and pistol whipped the victim, and put a partially-loaded revolver to the victim’s head and pulled the trigger twice after spinning the barrel, “Russian roulette” style. During the incident the Defendant told the victim, “If I can’t have you, no one can.”  After the attack was over, Sharry called 911 and attempted to frame the victim’s new significant other for his crimes.

Sharry entered a guilty plea to each charge and did not testify at his sentencing. The victim provided nearly an hour of testimony about her experiences at the defendant’s hands, and the impact these crimes had on her life.

“Domestic abuse of any kind cannot be tolerated, but an abuser like Sharry, who is willing to strangle, is a lethal threat to anyone in his life and the community as a whole,” said District Attorney Tommy Humphries. “We hope that the victim in this case can continue to heal and find peace knowing Sharry is in prison for a very long time.” I commend Assistant District Attorney Cathryn Lind and the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office who worked together to ensure the result of this case.” Sharry will not be eligible for parole until 2045.
