A Canadian County jury of seven women and five men found former Oklahoma City Police Officer Shamar Kitchens guilty of six felonies and one misdemeanor following a three-day trial. Kitchens was convicted of Rape in the First Degree, Rape by Instrumentation, Forcible Sodomy, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Pointing a Firearm, Possession of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, and Domestic Abuse.
The state presented evidence that on November 30, 2024, Kitchens drove the victim to a rural area of Canadian County, where he held her at gunpoint and threatened to kill her. He then sexually and physically assaulted her, leaving visible injuries. Kitchens testified in his own defense and maintained his innocence, while acknowledging that some of his initial statements to law enforcement were untrue because he had wanted to go home.
District Attorney Tommy Humphries expressed appreciation shortly after the verdict was announced. “This result would not have been possible without the thorough investigation led by the Oklahoma City Police Department, with assistance from the Yukon Police Department and the FBI. Along with the work of Assistant District Attorneys Eric Epplin and Cathryn Lind, this was truly a team effort.”
Humphries also praised the victim and other witnesses. “I commend the victim who bravely told and retold her account of what happened and appreciate the witnesses who came forward to corroborate the events. I hope she can find some peace from this verdict.”
After deliberating a little over three hours, the jury found Kitchens guilty on all counts and recommended a total of 69 years imprisonment. Formal sentencing will be held October 27 before Canadian County District Judge Paul Hesse, who presided over the trial.
